Decoding Strategy for Longer Words
1. Look for prefixes and suffixes 2. Look at base/root word 3. Scoop syllables in baseword (What’s the vowel sound?) 4. Read base/root word 5. Add prefix/suffix back and read whole word Example: dis/re/spectful dis and re are prefixes, ful is a suffix spect is a root word with a short vowel sound dis-re-spect-ful You just read a four syllable word!!
